Saxon – Saxon Album

Released in 1979, Saxon marks the self-titled debut album of the British heavy metal band Saxon, standing as a foundational release in the early development of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). The record captures a raw, unrefined sound that reflects both the urgency and the underground spirit of the movement at the time.
The album begins with “Rainbow Theme,” a short instrumental that establishes a dark and atmospheric introduction before flowing directly into “Frozen Rainbow.” That track quickly reveals the band’s early identity, driven by a strong central riff and a dramatic sense of melody. Songs such as “Stallions of the Highway,” “Backs to the Wall,” and “Militia Guard” further highlight the group’s emphasis on speed, grit, and street-level realism.
Although it did not achieve major commercial success upon release, Saxon gradually earned recognition as a cult classic, particularly among fans of early British heavy metal. Its importance lies not in polish, but in authenticity — a snapshot of a band still shaping its sound while already displaying confidence and intensity.
A defining element of the album is the commanding voice of Biff Byford, whose powerful and expressive delivery would later become one of the most recognizable vocals in heavy metal. Equally important is the twin-guitar partnership of Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver, whose sharp, driving riffs laid the groundwork for Saxon’s future releases and became a signature feature of their style.
Today, Saxon is widely regarded as a landmark NWOBHM debut, valued for its raw energy, memorable songwriting, and historical significance. It remains an essential listen for fans of classic British heavy metal and anyone interested in the roots of the genre.
All tracks are written by Biff Byford, Paul Quinn, Graham Oliver, Steve Dawson and Pete Gill.
