Abominog is the 14th studio album by British rock band Uriah Heep, released in March 1982 by Bronze Records in the United Kingdom, and in September 1982 by Mercury Records in the United States. It was their first album without keyboardist Ken Hensley. The album was critically acclaimed and fairly commercially successful, More at Wikipedia
The album features Peter Goalby on lead vocals, Mick Box on guitar, Bob Daisley on bass, Lee Kerslake on drums, and John Sinclair on keyboards. This lineup brought a tighter, more aggressive sound, with a stronger focus on riff-driven songwriting, punchy rhythms, and anthemic choruses, while largely moving away from the progressive and organ-heavy textures of the band’s 1970s output.
Musically, Abominog blends classic hard rock with influences from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and contemporary arena rock. Tracks such as “Too Scared to Run,” “That’s the Way That It Is,” “The Wizard,” and “Hot Night in a Cold Town” showcase sharp guitar hooks, polished production, and a more modern vocal delivery. Several songs were written by external songwriters, reflecting a strategic move toward radio-friendly material without sacrificing intensity.
While initially divisive among longtime fans, Abominog was critically well received and is now widely regarded as a successful comeback album, revitalizing Uriah Heep’s relevance in the early 1980s. Its energetic sound, strong production, and confident performances helped introduce the band to a new generation of listeners and demonstrated their ability to evolve with changing musical trends.
Today, Abominog stands as a key example of how a veteran rock band can reinvent itself without losing its core identity, earning its place as one of the most important albums in Uriah Heep’s later discography.
