Shavo Odadjian was born on April 22, 1974, in Yerevan, Armenia, and John Dolmayan was born on July 15, 1973, in Beirut, Lebanon. The band formed after the members met through various connections in the Los Angeles music scene, initially performing under the name Soil before changing to System of a Down.

System of a Down’s self-titled debut album was released on June 30, 1998, and received positive reviews, establishing them in the music scene. Their breakthrough came with the release of their second album, Toxicity, on September 4, 2001, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
