Rather than describing a universe created directly by a perfect and benevolent God, many Gnostic systems proposed a layered reality an ultimate divine source beyond ordinary comprehension, a succession of divine emanations, an imperfect creator known as the Demiurge, and a material cosmos governed by lesser powers called Archons.
