Black Label Society – Angel Of Mercy
Black Label Society: A Legacy of Riff-Heavy Metal and Uncompromising Attitude
Black Label Society is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1998 by guitarist, singer, and primary songwriter Zakk Wylde. Known for their crushing guitar riffs, whiskey-soaked swagger, and a devoted following known as the "Berzerkers," the band has become a cornerstone of modern heavy metal. With eleven studio albums to their name, they have sold over 3.5 million albums worldwide and remain a massive presence on the touring circuit.
From Ashes to a Sonic Brew: The Formation
The seeds of Black Label Society were planted after Zakk Wylde's earlier projects came to an end. In the early 1990s, Wylde formed the band Pride & Glory, which blended bluesy Southern rock with heavy metal. However, they disbanded in December 1994 after releasing only one album . Following this, Wylde took a more acoustic and introspective turn with his solo album, Book of Shadows, in 1996.
Despite limited commercial success with that record, Wylde was driven to create something new. In May 1998, he and drummer Phil Ondich began recording what would become the debut album for a new band. It was decided that this would not be another solo project but a long-term band. From the start, it was known that Nick Catanese would be the second guitarist, having previously toured with Wylde . The band's name, "Black Label Society," is a reference to the whiskey brand, fitting its hard-living, no-nonsense image.
The debut album, Sonic Brew, was first released in Japan on October 28, 1998 . Due to delays in securing a record deal with Spitfire Records, the album did not see a worldwide release until May 4, 1999. The album, with its heavy, blues-infused metal sound, immediately established the band's signature style. Bassist John DeServio, who had previously worked with Wylde, joined for the album's supporting tour.
A Rotating Cast of Riff Lords
The band's history is marked by numerous lineup changes, with Wylde remaining the sole constant creative force. On the first four studio albums, Wylde played every instrument except for the drums, including all vocals, guitars, piano, and bass guitar. This showcases his immense musical talent and his complete control over the band's sound.
Key lineup milestones include:
- The band's second album, Stronger Than Death, followed in 2000, with DeServio being replaced by Steve Gibb on bass. Drummer Craig Nunenmacher replaced Phil Ondich in July 2000 .
- In 2002, the band released 1919 Eternal, an album that was notably dedicated to Wylde's father.
- A period of significant bass player turnover followed, with Mike Inez (Alice in Chains), Robert Trujillo (who left to join Metallica in 2003), and James LoMenzo all holding the position at various times.
- In 2005, the band signed with Artemis Records and released the album Mafia. Later that year, original bassist John DeServio returned to the band, a position he has held ever since.
- The band signed to Roadrunner Records for the 2006 album Shot to Hell, but parted ways with the label in June 2007.
The Modern Era and Continued Dominance
The 2010s saw a new chapter for Black Label Society. After a period of further drum changes, the band released their eighth studio album, Order of the Black, on August 10, 2010, which became their highest-charting release at the time, reaching number 4 on the Billboard 200.
The compilation album The Song Remains Not the Same followed in 2011, featuring unplugged versions of material from Order of the Black. Its title is a nod to one of Wylde's favorite bands, Led Zeppelin. In December 2013, it was reported that long-time guitarist Nick Catanese had amicably left the band. He was replaced by Dario Lorina (formerly of Lizzy Borden) in January 2014.
The new lineup released Catacombs of the Black Vatican on April 8, 2014, debuting at number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart The band continued their prolific output with the album Grimmest Hits in January 2018. The band's most recent studio album, Doom Crew Inc., was released on November 26, 2021, with its lead single "Set You Free" being named the 22nd-best metal song of the year by Loudwire.
The Current Lineup and Legacy
Today, Black Label Society continues to be a powerhouse of heavy metal. The current lineup consists of founder Zakk Wylde (lead vocals, guitars), John DeServio (bass), Dario Lorina (rhythm guitar), and Jeff Fabb (drums). Wylde's work is not limited to BLS; he also returned to Ozzy Osbourne's band on several occasions, played with the supergroup Generation Axe, and has been a touring guitarist for the reunited Pantera since 2022.
The band's legacy is one of raw power, unpretentious heavy metal, and unwavering dedication from its core member. With a massive discography and a reputation for fierce live performances, Black Label Society stands as a testament to the enduring power of riff-driven rock and roll, inspiring a new generation of metal musicians.
