Humble Pie was an English hard rock band formed in 1969 in Moreton, Essex, by singer and guitarist Steve Marriott, following his departure from Small Faces. From the beginning, the group stood out as one of the earliest supergroups of the late 1960s, bringing together experienced musicians with strong roots in rock, blues, and soul. Their sound blended raw hard rock energy with blues-based grooves and soulful vocals, setting them apart from many of their contemporaries.
The band achieved significant success in the early 1970s, particularly through relentless touring and powerful live performances that resonated strongly with audiences in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Albums like Rock On and Smokin’ helped establish their reputation, while songs such as “Natural Born Bugie,” “Black Coffee,” “30 Days in the Hole,” and their electrifying cover of “I Don’t Need No Doctor” became defining tracks of their career.
Despite lineup changes and periods of instability, Humble Pie left a lasting legacy as a bridge between late-1960s rock experimentation and the heavier, blues-driven hard rock of the 1970s. Their influence can be heard in countless rock acts that followed, particularly those emphasizing groove, grit, and live intensity.
