POP music in the 80s was characterized by heavy use of synthesizers and drum machines, resulting in a often danceable, upbeat sound. The 90s saw a shift away from this style, with more focus on guitars and organic instrumentation. This change in sound was likely influenced by the grunge movement that was popular at the time.
