Heart is an American rock band formed in 1970 in Seattle, Washington, originally emerging from a group called White Heart. The early lineup included Steve Fossen (bass), Roger Fisher (guitar), David Belzer (keyboards), and Jeff Johnson (drums), but the band’s definitive identity took shape in 1973 with the arrival of sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson, who became the creative and vocal core of Heart.
Ann Wilson’s powerful, wide-ranging lead vocals — among the most respected in rock history — combined with Nancy Wilson’s distinctive guitar work, songwriting, and harmonies, set Heart apart in a male-dominated rock scene. The band quickly gained recognition for blending hard rock, folk rock, and acoustic elements, balancing heavy riffs with melodic and emotional depth.
Heart achieved major commercial success in the mid-to-late 1970s with albums such as Dreamboat Annie (1975), Little Queen (1977), and Dog & Butterfly (1978), featuring classic songs like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” and “Heartless.” In the 1980s, the band successfully adapted to a more polished, radio-friendly sound, scoring massive hits with “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” and “Never.”
Throughout their career, Heart experienced several lineup changes, but the Wilson sisters remained its constant driving force. The band has sold over 35 million records worldwide, earned multiple Grammy nominations, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, recognizing their lasting influence and artistic legacy.
Heart is widely regarded as one of the most important rock bands to feature female leaders, breaking barriers while delivering a catalog that spans hard rock power, acoustic elegance, and timeless songwriting.
