Bastet, also known as Bast, is an ancient Egyptian goddess who was worshipped as the goddess of home, fertility, childbirth, and cats. She was originally depicted as a lioness and was associated with the goddess Sekhmet. Later on, she was depicted as a woman with the head of a cat and was seen as a more gentler and nurturing deity. Bastet was a popular goddess and was worshipped throughout ancient Egypt, especially in the city of Bubastis where her major temple was located. She was considered to be the protectress of the home and the bringer of good luck, health, and prosperity. Cats were also seen as sacred to Bastet and were often kept in homes as protectors against evil spirits.
